Project Zomboid

About

Project Zomboid is the ultimate in zombie survival. Alone or in MP: you loot, build, craft, fight, farm and fish in a struggle to survive. A hardcore RPG skillset, a vast map, massively customisable sandbox and a cute tutorial raccoon await the unwary. So how will you die? All it takes is a bite..

PSA this is a review for build 41! I will review 42 once it is out as a stable version. This review is also under construction because the game itself keeps distracting me..

Do you ever feel like your gaming life lacks challenge? Like you want to yell 'F*ck this!' and throw your keyboard into a trash can and set it on fire? If so, Project Zomboid is for you!

Project Zomboid is a brutally hard survival craft Zombie game that hates you. It'll sense you're doing a bit too well then throw a hoard of Z's behind a door to chomp on you. You'll have to keep on top of sleep, food and water in this game as well as temprature.

(Fun fact. It took me over a day to get the above image on this page because I got distracted by how much I love this game trying to get screenshots of it.)

You start the game with only the clothes on your back (unless you gave yourself a starter kit in sandbox mode.) From there you have to fight to survive in a zombie filled world. A really, really big zombie filled world. Like really big.

The whole map. It's fucking huge.

Now, you will die a lot. You will likely die to zombies, as the below image shows.

Om nom nom.

its slightly less likely you will die to fire, cold, starvation, dehydration or bleeding out. But eventually, you will die. The point is how long it takes and what you can do before it happens.

Tips

Tips to play the game.

  • If you don't like very fustrating games, PZ isn't for you.
  • Use sandbox mode to make the game easier if it's your first time playing.*
  • If you hear a helicoper, stay inside.
  • The backpack/cool weapon that zombie has isn't worth it.
  • Don't use mods that change the gameplay until you have the handle of vanilla Zomboid.
  • Lucky is a very useful trait.

*If you look this up online there's suggestions for the best way to 'baby mode' the game. Personally I'd weaken the zombies, turn off infection, turn off the helicopter event and start with a starter kit. Do this until you have the hang of combat, then slowly up the difficulty.

Summary

This game is very, very hard but everytime you die you learn how to live a little longer. You find out what traits and tactics work best together, what areas are good for looting - and which to avoid. I have managed to survive a maximum of one month (it would have been longer but I deleted my save by mistake. RIP Joy Addams.)
