TheoTown is a city building game in which you can build and manage your own city. Take on the role of a city builder and manage multiple cities! Create a town and build it up to an enormous metropolis.
Be the mayor of each city that can establish amazing skylines and structures, all of which simulate various statistics. Establish great and complex transportation networks. Choose how your citizens will move around! Train stations, airports, bus depots. Manage and customize your transportation vehicles! Pick your aircraft livery , establish your bus routes, build your rail network!
Tackle emergency events, such as natural disasters, disease, crime, and fire.
Erect world wonders like Big Ben, the Eiffel Tower, the Statue of Liberty and many more! Feel like something is missing? Add it, with user made plugins!
Theotown is a city builder game that isn't riddled with adverts or pay to play. It is a full game on purchase so no DLC is needed to make it playable. It also supports community made plug ins for iOS and mods for steam.
It has multiple accessibility options and works on iPad and for Windows computers, but not Macs far as I am aware. The controls are simple yet offer complex customisation for your city. You can choose between residential, farm, harbor commerical or industrial zones for buildings.
There are many decorations for your city such as fences, trees, road lights and many more. However, buildings must be connected to roads, water and electricity.
Theotown bases your progression on how large your city is. To achieve this you must see to the needs of your inhabitants. You must provide education, sports, places to worship, heathcare, fire departments and policing. Yeah, that last one gets a little under my skin for a few reasons with how it is presented in game.
Here is a large town in theotown. My little project city of laketropolis. Any futher images will be going in my play to avoid clogging this review section. But anyway, bigger city equals bigger buildings and more unlockable features.
Summary
The controls are simple enough and work just fine on my iPad with few incidents of things going in the wrong places. The only time it gliched on me was because I hadn't updated my iOS for a while and worked perfectly after the update.
Again, no play to pay or adverts in game just a single purchace to enjoy the game. In the age of micro transactions this is a breath of freash air. I'd happily pay for DLC because this game isn't trying to shortchange me. It does get a little repetitive after a while, but I do find that I keep coming back to this game. There's something very satisfying about it.
But I'm not a fan of the way the police and military are portrayed in game. It could be tongue in cheek, but the way the in game mechanics work means that the police and the military are a net positive for your city. And not just in a wishy washy centerist way: there are SWAT hq's and prisons; in this game riots about bad city conditions can be supressed with riot squads.
But overall the positives are enough I keep coming back to it.
Tips
Tips for playing TheoTown.
- Start on easy mode if you are unfamiliar with city building games.
- Plan your city layout early on if asthetics are important to you.
- Taxes are a good way to generate passive income. I tax the poor at 7%, middle income at 7.5% and rich at 8%.
